Manga Ink Painting

East Asian ink-wash brush painting (sumi-e / suibokuga): monochrome black ink on absorbent paper, with at most one restrained flat accent of color. Virtuoso calligraphic brushwork from tapered round brushes — decisive single strokes that are never corrected, varied pressure and speed producing dry 'kasure' streaks and feathered broken edges. Wide tonal range from deep saturated black through diluted silver-grey washes; wet-on-wet blending and dropped ink create atmospheric mists and soft bleeding halos. Generous empty paper used as active negative space; asymmetric composition; emphasis on the 'spirit' of the subject rather than realistic modelling. Visible ink spatter and irregular wet edges.
